At 6:00 am on the morning of April 16, 2025, the Church doors were open and anticipating the arrival of this beautiful stained glass image titled "Twelve-Year Old Christ in the Temple." The glass was carefully held upright and wheeled into the church where it was lifted and secured to the front wall of the Sanctuary, near the Altar.
The glass image is based upon a painting of the same title created by Heinrich Hofmann in 1893. It was created by Tiffany Studios as a window for the Danbury Baptist Church in Danbury, CT. That church was demolished in 1955 and the window was removed. The glass was in private ownership until it was donated to Liberty Village Utah.
Tiffany Studios stained glass art is well-known and admired for the methods employed by the artists to imitate reality. The glass in this particular window appears thicker in various areas that resemble the folds in the cloth robes worn by the priests and the young Christ. The use of both opaque and more transluscent glass combine to create dramatic light and dark areas in the image.
Liberty Village has graciously loaned the lovely glass art to the Church. It will remain at Grace for three to five years until its permanent home is constructed in the developing Liberty Village. Our gratitude goes out to Dennis Leavitt of Liberty Village for his desire to have the artwork displayed where it can be seen and appreciated. Mr. Leavitt has stated that it is fitting to display the piece at Grace Episcopal Church since the building where it will eventually reside is to be a replica of the historic St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia where Patrick Henry made his famous "Give me Liberty" speech.
